World of Warships Supertest: German Tier X Freemium Submarine U-4501

3 min read

Soooo… yeah. Guess we are now on the next step with submarines. Even though the whole balancing of the ship type is an absolute dumpster fire, we are getting our first tier X submarine freemium entering testing.

Historical background

U-4501 was a never-completed submarine of the Type XXVI design. The design was intended as a small high-seas U-boat propelled by the Walter system.

These submarines were following a modular design with the construction of 8 sections in steel construction companies followed by manufacturing in specialized submarine shipyards. The section would then be assembled in a larger shipyard. These submarines were meant to be armed with ten torpedo launchers, four on the bow and 6 on the side, and pointed towards the rear.

In total, an order of 100 units was placed in May 1944 with the various units being named U-4501 to U-4600. By the end of the war, only some sections of U-4501 to U-4504 had been started.

In World of Warships, the U-4501 is somehow breaking all laws of physics with an underwater speed of 41 knots, making it the fastest submarine in the game by far. Meanwhile, the design was only meant to reach 23 knots underwater.

Personal Opinion

As of right now, U-4501 would seem like a perfect submarine for shotgunning because of its ludicrous underwater speed allowing it to quickly close the distance, drop the front torpedo launchers on target and then chain it with the rear launchers. The thing is that Wargaming recently nerfed shotgunning (thank God) by making the torpedo spread enormous. This could potentially hit 4501 particularly hard.

However, 4501 has an incredibly small HP pool offering very little room for mistakes.
