World of Tanks Supertest: Italian Tanks Mechanics

2 min read

Italians are still far from coming to the game, but when they are introduced a brand new mechanic will be available: auto-reloading. Because it’s important to balance the new mechanic, Wargaming started fine tuning it in closed tests. Instead of using the actual tanks, full scale in-game 3D tank mockups equipped with auto-reloaders tuned for Tiers VIII, IX, and X were introduced with the objective of:

  1. Defining the optimal reloading time – both for shifting shells inside the cylinder, and adding new ones when the cylinder is partially empty;
  2. Balancing other values like DPM and penetration.

This complex approach will try to make sure that upper-tier Italian tanks with auto-reloaders are fun to play and not over or underpowered. As for the 3D mockups mentioned above, these are crude models with little detail, which we also call “tank dummies”. They are similar in shape, armouring, and dimensions to real tanks that appear later on.

  1. This new mechanic confuses me to no end. Its so complicated, i bet italians tanks will be the less played tanks after they come out

  2. Its not rocket science and is very simple. Single shots are the fastest way to reload and the best DPM. Once you fire more than one your DPM goes down in exchange for burst damage. Say the first reload is 7 seconds for one shell. If you fire more than one shell the reload goes to say 10 seconds per shell. Then fire the third shell and your reload per shell goes to 13 seconds making your clip reload 39 seconds long compared to 21 seconds if you would just fire single rounds.

    But the advantage is if you catch a side of a tank you can dump X amount of damage from three shells in 9 seconds rather than wait the 21 seconds it would have taken for it to fire three individual shots.

  3. Mhhh.. Tier VIII spotted, and it looks A LOT like the true P43 bis rather then the previously hypotized P.35/P43 (a slight scale reduction of the Panther with a diesel engine derived form the Hispano Suiza Aviation engine and a 90/42-53 gun). This makes sense because of the better flavour of an Italian design at tier VIII (the most played tier) instead of a copycat from German or American sources. I still hope the Tier X will be an auto reloader OTO version of the Leopard I; the German Leopard is probably the most underperforming tier X medium tank right now and the Italian gimmick could gives some breath to it!
