HMS Nelson will be available for Free Experience
4 min readWargaming decided to make the Nelson available through the tech tree for Free Experience, instead the usual method of sale via Premium Shop and eventual availability in the tree for doubloons.
It will cost 375,000 Free XP points and there are palns towards making It available to players before the launch of the British battleship line.
While many players would have liked to see the ship as part of the upcoming tech tree branch, Wargaming didn’t believe Nelson’s armament layout, or putting King George V at Tier VIII were good ideas. Data showed that things like caliber or layout changes within a tech tree line are generally detrimental to player experience. Izumo is an example of this problem, though in this case the saving grace is that players who unlock her already have some amount of experience and that the line ends with Yamato, which pushes a lot of players to make the effort.
Another ship with “fully frontal” armament that has been cited as a counter-argument to this is Dunkerque, which is very popular relatively easy to play even for less experienced players. However, both of Dunkerque’s turrets are superfiring and the ship does not require risky maneuvers to bring all guns to bear against an enemy, which is a big part of the issue here.
Keeping those aforementioned fans in mind, Wargaming decided to make playing the Nelson a choice, rather than a necessity on the way up the new branch and to make the ship achievable in-game by spending Free XP points. The ability to unlock the ship using Free XP points lets a player freely define whether to spend money on it or not and if yes, how much of that money he wants to spend.
Of course, with the amount required to unlock the Missouri it might seem like just a substitute payment method, but since her introduction we’ve also given players more options for accumulating this currency and we know that many players have a fair amount of free XP stored on their accounts. Because of this, we’ve also made Nelson slightly more expensive than a premium battleship of her tier would be in terms of direct conversion between doubloons and Free XP.
I believe the proposed amount of Free Experience is manageable for all players and overall it’s nice to be able to get this ship for free.
