Supertest: Soviet Tier VIII Premium Cruiser Pyotr Bagration
5 min readNext to the Ochakov, we are also getting a second Tier VIII Premium cruiser, the Pyotr Bagration.
The Pyotr Bagration is a bit of an oddball among the upcoming Russian cruisers. Firstly, it doesn’t have Surveillance Radar. Secondly, it sits between the light cruisers since she has the standard cruiser dispersion and the heavy cruisers for her strong AP, short AP fuse time and strong armor protection.
The ship is based on one of the variations of the Project 65 of cruisers from the Soviet Navy. This project was part of the 1946-1955 shipbuilding program. There were 2 main variants with the first being armed with 152 mm guns and the second with 180 mm guns.
In the end, this project was canceled in 1951 in favor of more ships of the Sverdlov-class (Project 68 bis).

The armor
The Pyotr Bagration presents a very good armor scheme for a tier VIII light cruiser with a full spaced armor scheme and even an extended belt on the bow.
The bow section
The bow is 25 mm thick just like most tier VIII cruisers but she gets an extra in the form of a 40 mm extended belt.
For the upper casemate, it’s only 19 mm thick.
The citadel’s athwartship is 180 mm thick for the upper part and 16 mm thick for the lower underwater part.
The middle section
The deck of the Pyotr Bagration is 27 mm thick. However, since she is categorized as a light cruiser, her side armor is only 25 mm thick.
For the main belt, it’s 152 mm thick.
When it comes to the citadel that is in space armor configuration, it is 40 mm thick. This will make her citadel quite trolly since it’s… basically the same scenario as the Henri IV.
The ship presents a quite unusual plating. In fact, above the citadel side armor, there is a 30 mm plating that goes all the way up to the deck.
I actually wonder if that means that the upper side armor also counts as a spaced armor or not. If it’s the case, this ship has a SERIOUS armor advantage compared to other tier VIII cruisers.
For the horizontal protection, the main armor deck is 75 mm thick soooo… well AP bombs just go through.
The stern section
For the stern, it’s 25 mm thick except around the steering gears where there is a 100 mm external plating.
For the upper casemate, it’s only 19 mm thick.
When it comes to the citadel athwartship, the upper part is 180 mm thick and the lower part is 16 mm thick.
The superstructure
The superstructure is 13 mm thick and is fairly high and large. Destroyers will have plenty to shoot at.
The turrets
For a cruiser, the turret protection is quite good. The face is 175 mm thick with a 39° slope. The sides are 120 mm thick at the front and 100 mm thick at the rear. For the roof, the front is 120 mm thick and the rear is 80 mm thick.
Personal opinion
So far, I don’t really know what to think of this ship. The armor is great, the anti-air is good but except that… there isn’t much to look at in terms of utility since she doesn’t have a Surveillance Radar and will simply be a roaming cruiser with on top of that, not the best DPM.
Now… if Wargaming gives her Hydroacoustic Search and Defensive AA Fire in separated slot but also buff her reload, she might be an interesting ship.
ur torp range under general tab says 10km, but the torp tab shows 8km range. which one is correct?
