World of Warships Supertest: British Tier X Submarine Thrasher
4 min readHistorical background
HMS Thrasher was a T-class submarine of the Royal Navy. The ship was laid down in November 1939, launched in November 1940, and commissioned in May 1941.
Thrasher was first deployed in the Mediterranean after her commissioning. In less than a year, she sank around 20 000 tons of enemy shipping with a mix of German, Italian, Greek, or French ships. Funnily enough, the biggest damage she suffered during that time was from friendly fire. She was bombed in error by a British bomber while she was near the coasts of Egypt. The damage received took a month to repair.
In February 1942, after sinking a supply ship, Thrasher was attacked. After surfacing, the crew discovered two unexploded bombs stuck in the gun-casing. The brave Lieutenant Peter Scawen Watkinson Roberts and Petty Officer Thomas William Gould took care of this potentially fatal threat to their submarine and managed to throw both bombs over the side. As a result of their heroic action, both men received the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award in the British honours system.
Later on, the ship was assigned to the Far East in the early part of 1945. While deployed there, Thrasher sank another 24 ships before the end of the war.
After the war ended, Thrashed was sold and broken up for scrap in March 1947.

For the classic reminder, this is a ship in testing, anything can change so don’t look at her like she would already be released.

The Armor
Personal Opinion
Welp… no need to think too hard to find a nickname for that one. Trasher stays right in line with the previous ships although her battery capacity advantage is now also gone. In action, U-2501 does absolutely everything better. The torpedoes, the survivability, the capacity to stay underwater, and the mobility, Thrasher is outmatched in all of these departments while still suffering from the other big weaknesses of her predecessors. She somewhat has an advantage with the short arming distance of her torpedoes against destroyers but then again, not sure if you would survive an encounter at such range.
As a unique gimmick, she has a controllable deck gun but with such a low HP pool and poor damage output, not sure if you would even want to risk using it. It is especially true considering that she gets standard destroyer dispersion, unlike I-56 which has the same dispersion as the Elbing branch.

Unless Thrasher is armed in Poseidon torpedoes, maximum firing range should be in meters – 10 000 km seems …. optimistic 😉
The . between 10 and 000 is there for a reason
