World of Warships Supertest: British Tier VIII Premium Submarine Alliance
5 min readHistorical background
HMS Alliance was an A-class submarine of the Royal Navy. The submarine was laid down in March 1945, launched in July 1945, and commissioned in May 1947. She was one of the seven A-class submarines completed with a snort mast, allowing the submarine to operate submerged while still being able to take air from the surface.
Alliance had a rather uneventful career. She spent the first 10 years of service testing the efficiency of the snort mast, remaining up to 30 days underwater at times. Between 1958 and 1960, she went through an extensive modernization, removing her deck gun as well as the external torpedo tubes that were fitted on the bow.
Everything was going quietly afterward except for her beaching herself in 1968 off the Isle of Wight and a battery explosion in 1971 which killed one man and injured 14 others.
From 1973 until 1979, she was made a training ship until she was towed to a Southampton dockyard in order to strengthen her keel. This was made so that Alliance could be lifted out of the water and preserved as a memorial. The ship even became a museum in 1981 at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport and can still be visited today.
In the early 2010s, the museum had to be momentarily closed for restoration due to an army of pigeons nesting on board and leading to some serious corrosion issues. Never underestimate the acidic power of pigeon poop…
In World of Warships, we are getting Alliance as she is ever since she became a museum (without the pigeons though). Compared to British tech tree submarines, she has access to standard torpedoes and all launchers can reload at the same time. Also, while her homing torpedoes are particularly slow, their homing effect ends far closer to the target than with other submarines.
For the sake of comparison, here is how it goes:
Alliance homing torpedoes:
- Destroyers: End of homing effect at 220 m for a single ping
End of homing effect at 70 m for a double ping - Cruisers: End of homing effect at 650 m for a single ping
End of homing effect at 330 m for a double ping - Battleships: End of homing effect at 900 m for a single ping
End of homing effect at 750 m for a double ping - Aircraft Carriers: End of homing effect at 540 m for single or double ping
- Submarines: End of homing effect at 110 m for a single ping
End of homing effect at 70 m for a double ping
Standard tier VIII homing torpedoes:
- Destroyers: End of homing effect at 440 m for a single ping
End of homing effect at 220 m for a double ping - Cruisers: End of homing effect at 1 320 m for a single ping
End of homing effect at 660 m for a double ping - Battleships: End of homing effect at 1 800 m for a single ping
End of homing effect at 1 500 m for a double ping - Aircraft Carriers: End of homing effect at 1 080 m for single or double ping
- Submarine: End of homing effect at 220 m for a single ping
End of homing effect at 110 m for a double ping

For the classic reminder, this is a ship in testing, anything can change so don’t look at her like she would already be released.

Personal Opinion
As of right now, outside of the meme effect of being able to basically launch a near-endless stream of slow homing torpedoes at an enemy ship, I don’t particularly see the point of Alliance. The fact that she relies quite heavily on homing torpedoes, just like the rest of the British submarines is quite bad as it makes her a prime target for ASW airstrikes. The problem is that this is something she can’t handle properly due to her low HP pool.
