Supertest: Pan-Asian Tier V Cruiser Chung King

5 min read

Historical background

Chung King was initially called HMS Aurora, a light cruiser of the Arethusa-class. After the war, the Aurora was sold to the Republic of China Navy (Taiwanese Navy) and renamed Chung King after the Chinese war time capital of Chung King (Chongqing). In February 1949, her crew defected to join the Communists and she was renamed Tchoung King.
A month later, she was sunk in Huludao harbour by Nationalist aircraft.

She was later salvaged with Soviet assistance but then stripped bare as “repayment”. The original engines were sent to the Shanghai Department of Electricity and were replaced with engines from the scuttled coastal defense ship Hai Yung. The empty hulk spent the rest of her life as an accommodation and warehouse ship, being subsequently renamed Huang He in 1959, when it was transferred to Shanghai on 27 October of that year to be converted to a salvage ship at a planned budget of 3 million ¥.

After spending 276,000 ¥, the conversion project was canceled, and the ship was once again transferred, this time to Tianjin in June 1965, used as a barracks ship and renamed Pei Ching. She was scrapped at some point during the Cultural Revolution. Her name tablet and ship’s bell were preserved in the Military Museum of the Chinese People’s Revolution.

In World of Warships, Chung King will be the first ship of the new Pan-Asian cruisers line and ironically, has the biggest guns of all the ships. She is equipped with deepwater torpedoes and the same Smoke Generator as Pan-Asian destroyers. For some reason, she retains the British AP shell characteristics with a short fuse timer and improved ricochet angles.

Ship’s preview

For the classic reminder, this is a ship in testing, anything can change so don’t look at her like she would already be released.

Personal Opinion

For a tier V cruiser, Chung King looks pretty decent. She gets great concealment allowing her to fire her torpedoes from a safe distance and while her HE DPM is pretty low, she gets the British AP to compensate. Also, she gets the Smoke Generator to deal damage while staying hidden.
