Supertest: Japanese Tier VIII Premium Destroyer Arashi (May contain weebery)
4 min readThe Arashi was a destroyer of the Kagerou-class from the Imperial Japanese Navy. Launched on 22 April 1940 and commissioned on 25 November 1940, the ship was armed with 3 twin turrets with 127 mm guns and 2 quadruple torpedo launchers with 610 mm torpedo tubes.
She is mostly famous for being the one that guided the U.S. attack planes to the Japanese carrier fleet during the Battle of Midway. The ship had been separated from the main fleet after chasing the submarine USS Nautilus that was escaping from a failed attack run on the battleship Kirishima. Once her crew decided to return to the fleet, the planes from USS Enterprise that were running low on fuel followed her and were able to find the Japanese carriers.
It’s during the Battle of Vella Gulf that Arashi was sunk, trying to land troops on New Georgia island. The ship, alongside the destroyers Hagikaze and Kawakaze, was attacked by the U.S. destroyers Dunlap, Craven and Maury and was sunk by them.
Now, you might be wondering “Wait, the ship is supposed to have 3 Japanese twin turrets. Why does she have 3 German single 150 mm gun turrets?”.
Well the answer is simple, blame the weebs.
In the second OVA of the anime High School Fleet, the Harekaze II (a ship built from the old Harekaze that sank in the last episode of the anime) is carrying the German 150 mm guns. This pretty much confirms that there will soon be a new collab with High School Fleet and also explains why the Arashi currently has no camouflage. I don’t really get why they used the name Arashi but whatever.
When it comes to World of Warships, the Arashi doesn’t have multiple hulls unlike what was said on Reddit. You only have a single option for the guns and the special feature of the ship is a Hydroacoustic Search.

The armor
The Arashi has the classic high tier destroyer armor. The hull is 19 mm thick, the superstructure is 13 mm thick and the turrets are 10 mm thick.
Personal Opinion
So we have a stock Kagerou hull with guns that will make her struggle to win any sort of gunfight. We also have a Hydroacoustic Search that will… not really benefit the ship considering her terrible firepower and finally with have strong torps that are basically the only thing worth talking about on this ship.
For all intents and purposes, this ship is just going to be some collection item with no real value in battle. Of course, this might change during testing but don’t get your hopes too high.
Shame there’s no option to mount the historical gun turrets.
