Supertest: AMX 13 (FL 11), Tier V Premium French Light Tank

2 min read

A familiar French light tank arrived on Supertest this morning:

This hybrid tank features the hull from the AMX 13 and the FL 11 turret from the Panhard EBR armored car. It is armed with a 75 mm gun that deals 110 HP of damage per shot and is able to penetrate up to 108 mm with the standard shell or 148 mm with its special shell. The dispersion at 100 m is 0.39 m, the aiming time is 2.1 s, and the reload time is 6 s.

The vehicle has good mobility characteristics as typical for light tanks. The top forward speeds are 65 km/h forward and 20 km/h in reverse. The specific power is 22.1 h.p./t. The view range is 360 m.
The hull armor in the frontal projection reaches 50 mm, while the turret frontal armor reaches 40 mm. It has a durability of 500 HP.

This vehicle may look familiar to some of you — beyond being a historical mashup of the AMX 13’s hull with the FL 11 turret designed for the Panhard EBR (which you can learn more about in Tanks Encyclopedia’s article on the AMX-13 Avec Tourelle FL-11), this vehicle was actually planned to be introduced into the game over 11 years ago(!) as part of the original French tech tree. The original version of this vehicle got so far as having a complete visual model + icons, and was even published in a post on the official WoT Facebook page on 31 October 2011:

While the original vehicle (which was seemingly intended as a premium) was cut from the original update, it seems we will finally be getting this rather unusual-looking light tank in the game at long last. Huzzah!

Of additional note, unlike the regular AMX 13 75, this vehicle does NOT have an autoloader — both historically and in-game. In short, the vehicle was conceived to fit the conditions of the First Indochina War, which were deemed unsuitable for the standard AMX 13 (with its much-longer 75 mm SA 50 gun and non-air-transportable weight). While the conversion – which (as mentioned above) fitted the Panhard EBR’s lighter FL 11 turret and shorter + lower-velocity 75 mm SA 49 gun atop the AMX 13’s hull – was deemed successful (saving a total of 1.6 tons over the standard AMX 13 while also being quite a bit smaller), the vehicle did not go into mass-production for a number of reasons (which can be found in Tanks Encyclopedia’s article on this vehicle).

As for the current-day version of this vehicle, Wargaming have provided some official preview renders:

It has been speculated that this vehicle may either be a new vehicle for this year’s Well-Deserved Reward, or a low-tier premium to be included in the Large Holiday Ops Boxes around the end of the year. HOWEVER, the vehicle’s purpose has not been confirmed at this time. Stay tuned!
