World of Warships Supertest: Pan-Asian Tier III Premium Cruiser Ning Hai
4 min readHistorical background
Ning Hai was the lead ship of a class of light cruisers from the Republic of China Navy. The class was composed of two ships, Ning Hai and Ping Hai. Ning Hai herself was laid down in Japan in February 1931, launched in October 1931, and commissioned in September 1932. Her sister would, however, be built in China with some Japanese assistance.
When the Sino-Japanese war broke out, despite her limited fighting capacities, Ning Hai was still considered a priority target for the Japanese Navy. She was, after all, one of the most powerful ships China had at its disposal. During the Japanese assault on Kiangyin Fortress, both her and Ping Hai would come under attack by enemy bombers. While her sister got sunk by eight bomb hits, Ping Hai was able to survive and escape after four hits. However, the next day, on the 25th of September 1934, she was attacked by torpedo bombers and was hit twice. She ended up sinking into shallow waters.
In 1938, the ship was refloated by Japanese forces. Initially, she was meant to become a flagship for a collaborationist navy but instead, was towed back to Japan where she was renamed Mikura and classified as a training ship. However, by July 1938, the ship was permanently moored at Sasebo and used as a barracks hulk until December 1943. At this point, due to allied submarines doing serious numbers on Japanese convoys, the Japanese were badly in need of escort ships to try to defend said convoys. As such, Ning Hai was reconstructed and recommissioned as Ioshima in June 1944. Her new career wouldn’t last though. During her second mission, she was hit by three torpedoes from the submarine USS Shad and quickly sank on the 19th of September 1944.
In World of Warships, we are getting Ning Hai as she was while serving in the Republic of China Navy.

For the classic reminder, this is a ship in testing, anything can change so don’t look at her like she would already be released.

Personal Opinion
Well… I guess her balance state won’t matter as she is more of a promotional ship for the Chinese player base than anything else. However… with that speed, the huge citadel that cruisers can penetrate with HE, and her lack of firepower… that ship is going to have it rough I would say.
