World of Warships Supertest: Japanese Tier V Cruiser Agano

6 min read

Historical background

The Agano-class was a group of four ships (Agano, Noshiro, Yahagi, and Sakawa) built by the Imperial Japanese Navy during the Second World War. These ships were meant to replace the completely obsolete Tenryu, Kuman, and Nagara-class cruisers as flagships of destroyers squadrons. However, due to Japanese shipyards being overloaded, the ships only started construction at the start of the 1940s while the design was ready by 1937.
The ships’ main armament consisted of six 152 mm guns in three twin turrets as well as two quadruple 610 mm torpedo launchers.

Agano herself was laid down in June 1940, launched in October 1941 and commissioned in October 1942. The ship took part in the battles of Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands in 1943. However, later that year, Agano was attacked by aircraft from TF38 and was hit by a torpedo that blew off a part of her stern, forcing her to return home for repairs. Sadly, she and her escort were spotted on the way home and was hit by a torpedo from the submarine USS Scamp. The hit flooded the boiler rooms, leading the ship to lose power completely. She was then towed on the rest of her journey to Truk by her sistership Noshiro.

After emergency repairs were performed by the repair ship Akashi, the ship left Truk on the 15th of February 1944 with a small escort. The ships were then attacked by the submarine USS Skate and Agano was hit by 2 torpedoes. The ship steadily flooded and 523 members of her crew were rescued by the destroyer Oite… before she was sunk by TBF Avengers from TF58 the next morning with only 20 members of the destroyer’s crew surviving.

In World of Warships, Agano introduces us to the new Japanese light cruiser line.

For the classic reminder, this is a ship in testing, anything can change so don’t look at her like she would already be released.

Personal Opinion

As of right now, Agano is looking… painful to say the least. Stats-wise, she is very similar to Yahagi but without the Engine Boost. The only thing where Agano is better is with the front turrets being able to rotate at 360°. Other than that, considering how horrible Yahagi is to play, I’m not looking forward to playing this ship at all.
