World of Warships Supertest: British Tier VII Premium Battleship Renown ’44
5 min readHistorical background
HMS Renown was the lead ship of a class of two battlecruisers from the Royal Navy. The ship was laid down in January 1915, launched in March 1916, and commissioned in September 1916. Renown, alongside her sister Repulse, was the fastest capital ship in the world at the time of her completion. Sadly, she never saw combat during the First World War.
During the inter-war period, she underwent two major reconstructions with the one of the 1930s being the most significant. She also transported royalty during foreign tours and while Hood was under refit, she served as flagship of the Battlecruiser Squadron.
Renown saw extensive action during the Second World War. In 1939, she was deployed to hunt the German Panzerschiffe Admiral Graf Spee and while she failed to find her target, she still sank the blockade runner SS Watussi. During the Norwegian campaign, she engaged the German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and managed to damage the latter. However, due to the bad weather, the Germans were able to escape.
In 1941, she also took part in the hunt of the Bismarck but didn’t come in contact with the German battleship. Other than that, she spent most of the first 4 years of the 1940s escorting convoys and even Winston Churchill and his staff for conferences with the rest of the Allies. In 1944, she was transferred to the Indian Ocean where she supported numerous attacks against Japanese positions.
The ship finally returned home in early 1945 where she had a last refit before being sent to reserves.

In World of Warships, that second Renown is as she appeared in… duh… 1944.

For the classic reminder, this is a ship in testing, anything can change so don’t look at her like she would already be released.

Personal Opinion
Right now, Renown ’44 looks like a solid ship. While she only has 6 guns, she gets the battlecruiser dispersion as well as 1.8 sigma compared to 1.5 for Rooke. On top of that, she has a better reload time.
Other than that, while she has a short range for a battleship, she gets the speed and concealment to make up for it and the fact that she can use a Hydroacoustic Search allows her to have a more aggressive positioning.
As the last cherry on top, she even gets a 29 mm deck armor to protect her against battleship AP up to a caliber of 410 mm.
