World of Warships Supertest: British Tier V Battleship Tiger
6 min readHistorical background
HMS Tiger was a battlecruiser of the Royal Navy. The ship was laid down in June 1912, launched in December 1913, and commissioned in October 1914.
At the time of her commissioning, Tiger was the most heavily armored battlecruiser of the Royal Navy. During World War I, the ship was assigned to the 1st Battlecruiser squadron. The ship’s first major action of the war was during the Battle of Dogger Bank in January 1915. Due to her very recent commissioning, the ship was still in shakedown at the time of the battle. Because of this, her performances in battle were less than satisfying, especially when it came to her gunnery effectiveness.
Later on, she took part in the Battle of Jutland in May 1916 during which she was hit numerous times by German ships but remained fit to combat. In return, she was credited with one hit on the battlecruiser Moltke and 2 hits on Von Der Tann.
The rest of the war proved to be uneventful. She took part in the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight as support for British light forces but never came in range to shoot at the German ships.
After the war, the ship claimed the title of oldest battlecruiser retained after the tonnage limitation of the Washington Naval Treaty came into effect. She was placed in reserves in August 1922. Tiger would be recommissioned in February 1924 as a training ship until 1929 when she had to replace Hood as part of the Battlecruiser squadron made up of Hood, Repulse, and Renown. In 1930, it was decided to decommission Tiger once Hood would return to service after her refit was done. As such, in May 1931, she was decommissioned and later sold for scrap in 1932.
In World of Warships, we are getting Tiger as she was during the Battle of Jutland. Compared to Queen Mary, she gets an Engine Boost consumable and otherwise retains the characteristics of a battlecruiser by the game’s standards. Just like the other British tech tree battlecruisers, she gets underwater torpedo tubes.

For the classic reminder, this is a ship in testing, anything can change so don’t look at her like she would already be released.

Personal Opinion
While Queen Mary looked strong at tier IV, Tiger looks a lot more reasonable. While the ship has very good concealment and speed, especially thanks to the Engine Boost, her firepower really is on the weaker side.
She maintains the same main battery stats as Queen Mary which would be fine at tier IV but at tier V, it won’t really cut it, especially since you end up dealing with tier VII ships.
