World of Warships Supertest: British Super-battleship Devastation

4 min read

Historical background

Devastation has no real historical basis to speak of. When looking at Conqueror herself, the ship is based on the L2 battleship design from the 1920s. However, major changes were brought to this design to become more of a super-Vanguard. This origin somewhat faded away as Conqueror lost access to the 457 mm guns she could initially use. One could then make an argument that with the 419 mm guns, she resembles more to one of the… numerous Lion-class designs, specifically, 16E-38.

As for Devastation, Wargaming PROBABLY took a look at the Lion-class design X3a from 1945 which was armed with two quadruple turrets but with a smaller caliber. This could also be the source of the greater extended belt observed on Devastation.

For the classic reminder, this is a ship in testing, anything can change so don’t look at her like she would already be released.

Personal Opinion

God have mercy on our souls… As if Conqueror wasn’t already a horribly toxic design, now we get a bigger version with four more guns while keeping the same dispersion. Unless the Wargaming developers decide to nerf her firepower hard (which would make it unpleasant to play sadly), I can already hear the tears of cruisers and battleships being set on triple fire with half of their anti-air gone and with 15k/20k damage taken in a single HE salvo.

This is going to be… fun.
