World of Warships: Japanese Tier VII Destroyer Yuudachi Review

4 min read

Ladies and Gentlemen, today we are having a look at the Yuudachi, the Nightmare of Solomons, the Apoicalypse, the… the Magikarp of World of Warships. Yes, that ship is literally as interesting as a Magikarp except that it can’t evolve into a badass monster.

Tier VII Japanese Premium Destroyer Yuudachi: A big disappointment

Her permanent camouflage gives the standard Tier VII permanent camouflage bonuses:

The Good and the Bad

The Good

  • 15 km torpedo range
  • Good maneuverability
  • Good concealment
  • Torpedo reload booster

The Bad

  • Slow gun reload with only 5 guns
  • 30 s turret traverse
  • Slow torpedoes
  • 1.9 km torpedo detection range
  • Slow for a destroyer (34 knots base top speed)
  • Almost no anti-air
  • Low HP pool

My opinion

The Yuudachi is simply one of these premium ships that you don’t want to get in your port unless you are a fan of naval history. Her firepower is laughable, her torpedoes are only good at catching battleship players that would just sail in a straight line, her anti-air is more a decoration than anything else, she is with the Shiratsuyu the slowest destroyer of tier VII and her only somewhat redeeming characteristic is her concealment but she is only 3th at that tier, being out-spotted by Shiratsuyu and Haida.

Health pool

The HP pool of the Yuudachi is on the lower part of the spectrum with only 13 200 HP. This already limits to ship quite a lot in her capacity to take on gunfights because unless the enemy is well damaged already, she just cannot trade effectively.

Next black point of the Yuudachi, her firepower. She only has 5 guns, they take 9 seconds to reload and the turret traverse is painfully slow. It’s simple, unless you are 200% sure that you can’t get shot in return or that the enemy is low enough to die before he kills you, don’t take on gunfights, you will lose them.

The torpedo armament

Torpedo Tubes
2 x 4 610 mm Quad
Torpedo – Type90
Reloading Time100 s
Maximum Distance15.0 km
Optimal fronfiring angle60°
Optimal rear firing angle60°
Damage15 633
Speed57 kt
Surface Detectability1.9 km

Back when she was announced, the Yuudachi was supposed to get the same deep-water torpedoes as Asashio. Somehow… I would almost prefer these to her current torpedoes. Yes, they have 15 km range but they are slow with only 57 knots of speed (and I recommend to run torpedo acceleration) and they have a terrible detection range of 1.9 km. Any enemy player with a working brain will be able to dodge these unless the guy is sitting still and in the open.
The fact that you can get 16 in total in the water at the same time somewhat compensates it but they remain really underwhelming.

Once in a blue moon, you will get a good number of hits but do not get your hopes too high.

The anti-air armament

shot-19.10.02_12.04.38-0322

Air Defense
6 x 1 40 mm70 Bofors SP48
Sector range0.1 km – 2.5 km
Hit chance100 %
Sector’s damage6
Sector’s damage frequency0.29 s
Sector’s damage per second21

It exists. That’s pretty much all you can say about it. Even against fighter squadrons, you will take ages to kill the planes because of the very weak DPS.

Maneuverability and Concealment

Maneuverability and Concealment
Maximum speed34 kt
Turning Circle Radius570 m
Rudder Shift Time3.2 s
Surface Detectability7.0 km
Air Detectability 3.01 km
Detectability After Firing Main Gus in Smoke2.61 km

The Yuudachi will not win any race at her tier with an underwhelming 34 knots top speed. Any destroyer will be able to catch up with her and gun her down so you need to keep the distance.

At least, she turns very well and her concealment can reach a 6.1 km detection by sea and 2.7 km detection by air but these are pretty much the only good characteristics of the ship.

The armor

shot-19.10.02_12.04.58-0792.jpg

The Yuudachi has the classic 16 mm plating that is present on mid-tier destroyers. The superstructure is 10 mm thick and the turrets are protected by 20 mm of armor.

Conclusion

The Yuudachi simply isn’t worth it. She doesn’t have the firepower, her torpedoes require the enemy to be terribly dumb to reliably hit, she doesn’t have the speed.
Long story short, unless you are a big fan of the real ship, do not bother with that one.

Recommended build

During the testing of the Yuudachi, I used the following captain build and upgrades:
