Supertest: U.S. Tier VIII Premium Cruiser Rochester
4 min readHistorical background
USS Rochester was an Oregon City-class heavy cruiser from the U.S. Navy. The ship was laid down in May 1944, launched in August 1945 and commissioned in December 1946.
While her early career was very quiet, the ship would play an active role in the Korean War, supporting ground units by blazing her 203 mm and 127 mm guns on Korean forces.
She came very close to being heavily damaged when, on the 17th of September 1950, North Korean aircrafts targeted the ship. While the Yak-9 and Il-2 were initially identified as friendlies by the anchored cruiser, it quickly turned out that they very much weren’t when they dropped 4 bombs on the ship. Thankfully, all of them but one missed and the one that managed to hit the ship failed to detonate when it smashed the crane of the ship.
In April 1953, the ship steamed back home and during her refit, all of her 20 mm and 40 mm AA guns were replaced by twin 76.2 mm AA guns. She then spent the rest of the 50s and early 60s participating in training and operations in the Pacific. While it was planned to convert her into an Albany-class guided-missile cruiser, a lack of funds led to the project being abandoned and she was put in reserves in 1961 until being sold for scrap in 1974.
In World of Warships, we are getting Rochester as she was after her refit from 1953. Compared to Baltimore, she carries both Defensive AA Fire and Hydroacoustic Search on top of her Surveillance Radar. This comes at the cost of getting fewer consumable charges on the Hydro and Radar as well as weaker firepower than Baltimore.

For the classic reminder, this is a ship in testing, anything can change so don’t look at her like she would already be released.

Personal Opinion
Right now… I don’t really see the point of this ship compared to Baltimore.
Weaker firepower, worse radar (less range, fewer charges and shorter duration) and less maneuverable. All of these downsides just to have both Defensive AA Fire and Hydroacoustic Search and better concealment.
With Rochester, they could have pulled a smart move by putting her at tier IX and giving her the stats of the old Baltimore but instead, we get this. At least, the ship is ultra sexy.
