Supertest: Pan-European Tier IX Premium destroyer Friesland
3 min readLadies and Gentlemen, as the Update 0.8.5 is approaching, I propose you to have a look at the upcoming ships that entered the supertest. As we have to start from somewhere, let’s talk about the Friesland, a quite unique ship as it’s the very first destroyer without torpedoes.
At the end of World War 2, the Royal Netherlands Navy was severely weakened and had to be rebuilt. The initial idea was to build no less than 48 Anti-Submarine destroyers but, due to budget limitations, it was quickly scaled down.
The first ships to be built were the “Submarine Destroyer 1947” also known as the Holland-class. However, only 4 out of the 6 that were initially ordered were built. Later on, an improved version of this class would be built under the name “Submarine Destroyer 1949”. This class would be later known as the Friesland-class with in total 8 ships being built. The ships were armed with a main battery of 2 dual-purpose twin turrets with 120 mm Bofors guns. To complete the anti-air armament, the ship was also carrying 6 single Bofors 40 mm L/70 that were much more powerful than the L/60 widely used during the Second World War.
As for the anti-submarine armament, the class was equipped with 2 quads 375 mm anti-submarine mortars and 2 depth charge racks.
During the 1960s 2 ships of this class, the Utrecht and the Overijssel were equipped with 8 torpedo launchers but they were removed later on.
One thing to note, the ship is currently displayed in the Polish tech tree but it’s just a placeholder since there is no Pan-European tree yet.

The armor
Nothing surprising here, the hull is 19 mm thick, the superstructure is 13 mm thick and finally, the turrets are 10 mm thick.
Personal opinion
Right now, I’m very hyped about this ship. The firepower that she can bring, the anti-air (best anti-air of all DDs by far), these are simply JUICY!
Now, the ship itself is a bit clumsy for a destroyer, her detection range is quite high and the lack of torpedo might be an issue but we will see. One thing for sure, this ship will be a formidable destroyer hunter (and submarine hunter when these will be introduced ).
