Supertest: Japanese Tier VII Premium Destroyer Yuudachi

4 min read

Continuing our exploration of the new ships’ statistics, let’s have a look at the Yuudachi, the tier VII Japanese destroyer.
Why do I already fear a spam of “Poi~” in the game’s chat or on Reddit when the ship will be released?….

Anyway, the Yuudachi was the 4th ship of the Shiratsuyu-class of Japanese destroyer built under the “Circle One” Program.

The ship served during World War II and took part in the invasion of the Philippines. She will later take part in operations in the  Netherlands East Indies, including the invasions of Tarakan, Balikpapan and eastern Java. She would also participate in the Battle of the Java Sea during which she engaged enemy destroyers and cruisers.
In 1942, Yuudachi was assigned to “Tokyo Express” high-speed transport runs to Guadalcanal and assisted in the sinking of the destroyers USS Gregory and USS Little.

It is during the battle of Guadalcanal that she will meet her end. The problem is that the reports of her actions during the battle are a bit confusing so nobody can say accurately what happened to her during the battle.
After scoring a hit on the USS Portland with her torpedoes, her sailors mistook the destroyer USS Sterett as an allied ship and used the ship’s recognition signals. The Sterett then proceeded to fire at Yuudachi hitting the ship’s boilers and leaving her dead in the water.
To boost the morale of the crew, it was ordered to raise a white sail (that might have helped the ship to keep moving I guess?) that turned out to be interpreted as a white flag to surrender by the U.S. warships which angered the Americans when the ship kept firing. The captain of the USS Portland then ordered to the gunnery officer to “sink the S.O.B.”

As for World of Warships, the ship was announced to carry similar torpedoes to the Asashio, AKA deep-water torpedoes only able to hit battleships and aircraft carriers. However, for now, she has standard (and pretty underwhelming) torpedoes so not sure what is going on.

The armor analysis

Yuudachi.JPG

As a tier VII destroyer, Yuudachi possesses the classic tier VII destroyer armor. The hull is 16 mm thick, the superstructure is 10 mm thick and the turrets are protected by 20 mm of armor.

Personal opinion on the ship

Since the ship is supposed to get Asashio-like torpedoes, this is a big nope for me. I simply hate the concept of these torpedoes that limit your target choice a lot.

As for the rest, the ship’s statistics are overall superior to those of a fully researched Shiratsuyu except for the main battery reload (9 s vs 7.5 s).
