Supertest: Italian Tier VI Destroyer Aviere
4 min readHistorical background
Aviere was part of the Soldati-class of destroyers from the Regia Marina. The ship was laid down in January 1937, launched in September 1937 and completed in August 1938.
Aviere had a very active yet short career during the Second World War, taking part in numerous convoy escort and transport missions. She also participated in the battles of Calabria and Cape Passero, being heavily damaged by HMS Ajax during the latter.
On the 16th of December 1942, she sailed to Naples, escorting the German freighter Ankara towards Bizerta and the next day, was torpedoed by the submarine HMS Splendid. The ship quickly sank and out of a crew of 250 men, only 30 survived the sinking.

For the classic reminder, this is a ship in testing, anything can change so don’t look at her like she would already be released.

The Armor
The Aviere’s hull is 16 mm thick while the superstructure is protected by 10 mm and the turrets by 6 mm.
Personal Opinion
Eeeeeeeh…. here, it’s a bit awkward. Compared to the previous ships, the SAP on Aviere takes a massive nerf in terms of ricochet angles which means that the ship will need to rely a lot more on HE which has a much smaller DPM.
On top of that, we are now at the tier where we will have to deal with Surveillance Radar that might give a short end to any sort of smoked gun-blazing adventure. You also have a lot of ships that start having good ballistics which is problematic for a ship forced to get much closer to the enemy than any other destroyer.
