Supertest: German Tier VIII Premium Destroyer Z-35

3 min read

The Z-35 was the lead ship of the Type 1936 B destroyers from the Kriegsmarine. She was launched in October 1942 and commissioned in September 1943.

The ship had a fairly short career, consisting mostly of shore bombardment operations on Soviet positions, escorting convoys and laying minefields.
Z-35 met a quite… explosive fate in December 1944. As the flagship of captain Freidrich Kothe, commanding the 6. Zerstörerflotille consisting of Z-35, Z-36, Z-43 and the torpedo boats T-23 and T-28, she was tasked to lay a minefield between the Estonian coast and an existing minefield slightly further out to sea. However, a navigation mistake lead to Z-35 and Z-36 entered a nearby minefield and both ships sank. Only 70 crewmen of the Z-35 survived.

In World of Warships, the Z-35 is an oddball among German destroyers. She has the “1/4 caliber” HE penetration rule unlike the others, the same kind of smoke as the British destroyers but in return, gets the same torpedoes as the German cruiser with a range of only 6 km.

As usual, everything that you will see here is, of course, a work in progress.

The armor

The Z-35 has the standard armor of tier VIII destroyers. The hull armor is 19 mm thick while the superstructure and gun shields are 13 mm thick.

Personal opinion

Overall, the concept is fairly interesting. The ship ends up being heavily focused on her firepower and she does have a pretty good effective DPM with the improved HE penetration. Farming battleships with this will be fun, especially with the smoke on demand of the British destroyers.
For the torpedoes, except for bum rushing battleships, I don’t think that they will see much action.

The concealment is sadly the same as on the Z-23 so nothing great compared to the other Tier VIII destroyers.
