Supertest: German Tier IX Destroyer Felix Schultz
6 min readThe Felix Schultz is based on the Zerstörer 1938 Ac design of Spähkreuzer from the Kriegsmarine.
The Spähkreuzers was a somewhat unique concept compared to the contemporary navies of the time as they were sitting between destroyers and light cruisers in terms of armament, size and displacement.
These ships were meant as scouts for the fleet, escort for heavier units and convoys as well as raiders against weakly protected convoys.
This specific design was abandoned but was followed by the 1939 and 1940 variants.
In World of Warships, Felix Schultz represents the 1938 Ac design. However, the initially planned 88 mm dual-purpose mount is replaced by smaller AA mounts.
Currently, the concept of the alternative branch of German destroyers implies the following features:
- Accurate 150 mm guns
- Powerful AP shells with good damage, penetration capability, and improved ricochet angles. HE shells, on the contrary, deal moderate damage per minute.
- Availability of the Hydroaccoustic Search and, starting from Tier VIII, the Defensive AA Fire consumable. However, the new destroyers do not have a Smoke Generator.
- Great armor for the class.
- Torpedoes with good reload time and decent speed, but average damage and range.
For the classic reminder, this is a ship in testing, anything can change so don’t look at her like she would already be released.

The Armor
The armor on the Schultz remains very much the same as on the Maerker. There is just one big improvement for the protection of the main battery as the turrets have cruiser levels of protection with a 100 mm face.
Personal Opinion
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh… Somehow, the HE on that ship is worse than on the Maerker except for the ballistic. In fact, there are quite a few issues with the Schultz as a whole. The gun reload is worse than on the Maerker, the ship is just huge, the gun placement is very awkward as she can’t have 2 turrets available either when fully kiting or being fully angled, her maneuverability is horrible while not being anything close from the fastest and then… then there is the anti-air.
6.9 km AA range. Ok, that’s great but only 46 DPS and 2 flaks without even mentioning the rest of the AA which really doesn’t help much. If you have one of these DD players that never turn off their AA playing that ship, the guy will either simply be spotted from the moon when a plane is around or the CV striking it will have the easiest time of the world to find him.
If at least, the Defensive AA was a special one buffing by more than 50% the DPS, it could be fine-ish but here, don’t even try to roleplay a Halland while playing the new German Spähkreuzers.
Just to give you a rough idea of how big the ship is, here is, firstly, the Elbing next to the Smolensk and then on the second pic, from top to bottom, Elbing, Felix Schultz and Z-31.
