Supertest: Dutch Tier III Cruiser Java

First of all, I would like to apologize for the lack of content these past few days. Between work and the King of the Sea tournament, I was just way too busy to publish the articles on the new ships that will be released with the next update. It’s almost a good thing since quite a few of them were changed a few days ago. In any case, don’t worry, I will cover them all.

The Java-class was a pair of two light cruisers from the Royal Netherlands Navy although initially, a third ship, HNLMS Celebes was planned. Java herself was laid down in May 1916, launched in August 1921 and commissioned in May 1925. The class was designed the counter the Chikuma-class of protected cruisers from the Japanese Navy. The ships’ main armament consisted of ten deck mounted 150 mm guns which was, in the 1910s considered as heavily armed. However, due to the construction delays, by the time the ships entered service, they were already completely outdated.

Java had a quiet early career, serving in the Dutch Indies. In 1937, she was used as a convoy escort during the Spanish Civil War. When World War II started in the Pacific, Java was again performing convoy escort with British forces. In February 1942, she was attacked by carrier-borne bombers from the carrier Ryuujo but suffered no damage. The ship later took part in the Battle of Badung Strait, exchanging fire with Japanese forces but, again, suffered no damage.

It’s on the 27th February 1942 that the Java would meet her end. During the battle of the Java Sea, she was hit by a Long Lance torpedo fired from the cruiser Nachi. The ship sank quickly as the torpedo detonated an aft magazine blowing off her stern. Only 14 crew members survived the sinking.

The wreck of the ship was found in 2002 but sadly, it was discovered in November 2016 that Java, alongside De Ryuter had been illegally scraped and nothing was left of the two ships.

The Armor

Just like any tier III cruiser, the Java is protected with wet toilet paper but at least, her citadel will be difficult to hit.

Personal Opinion

On paper, the ship actually looks fairly strong. The ballistics of the guns are great for this tier, she is the fastest tier III cruiser and her HP pool is quite reasonable.
