Supertest: Italian Tier V Destroyer Maestrale

4 min read

Historical background

Maestrale was the lead ship of the Maestrale class of destroyers from the Regia Marina. The ship was laid down in September 1931, launched in April 1934 and completed in September 1934.

The ship’s active career mostly consisted of convoy escort duties during the Second World War. She was scuttled in September 1943 when the Armistice was signed and the wreck was recovered by the Germans later… just to be sunk again at the end of the war.

Ship’s preview

For the classic reminder, this is a ship in testing, anything can change so don’t look at her like she would already be released.

The Armor

The Maestrale is covered with 10 mm of armor everywhere except for the turrets that are only protected with 6 mm.

Personal Opinion

Maestrale is where things might start getting rough. With Main Battery and AA Expert, she can reach 7.7 km range for her main battery. While it will be fine against other destroyers and low-tier cruisers… I definitely think that engaging anything bigger without the Exhaust Smoke will be asking to die in a really painful way.

We will have to wait to see how that really short firing range concept works but in her case, I’m worried.
