Supertest: Dutch Tier IV Cruiser De Ruyter

HNLMS De Ruyter was a unique light cruiser of the Royal Netherlands Navy. The ship was laid down in September 1933, launched in March 1935 and commissioned in October 1936.

Initially and due to the economical context, De Ryuter was meant to be a far more modest ship with thinner armor, weaker firepower and as a whole only displacing 5 100 tons. During a later stage of her design, an additional single 150 mm gun turret was added and the armor protection was improved but the ship was still well behind the light cruisers of other nations in most regards.

De Ruyter would see action during World War II in the Dutch East Indies, trying to slow down the advance of the Japanese invasion with… limited success. In early February 1942, the ship was lightly damaged by an air attack during the Battle of Bali but would later take part in the battle of Badung Strait.

The Battle of the Java Sea would bring an end to her career on the 27th of February 1942. Alongside the cruiser Java, she encountered the Japanese cruisers Haguro and Nachi. Minutes after the Java sank from a torpedo strike coming from the Haguro, De Ryuter also suffered a torpedo hit from the same ship. The torpedo disabled the electric systems on board and the crew was unable to contain the fire and flooding caused by the hit. The ship sank 3 hours later and brought to the bottom 367 of her crew.

The wreck of the De Ruyter was discovered in 2002 and declared a war grave. In 2016, it was found that De Ruyter had been illegally salvaged and nothing was left of the wreck.

The De Ruyter we are getting in the game is a bit of a nerfed version as her anti-air was weakened (only five single 40 mm mounts instead of 5 twin 40 mm mounts)

For the classic reminder, this is a ship in testing, anything can change so don’t look at her like she would already be released.

The Armor

Once again, nothing outstanding for a tier IV cruiser. At least, she has a spaced armor to protect her citadel.

Personal Opinion

Well, the ship looks fairly decent. HP pool is on the higher end of the spectrum, the firepower is fine for this tier and the spaced armor will give her a non-neglectable survivability advantage compared to things like the Phoenix.

  1. Sidenote (to prove someone reads your articles – wink) – in your last article about Java you claim she was sunk by cruiser Nachi … not that it would make much difference. In fact different sources give different cruisers (Wikipedia claims Haguro for both cruiser’s sinkings, while Whittley for example gives Nachi credits for Java …).
