World of Tanks: Improved Matchmaker is here!

2 min read

On 3 April 2019, on all regions, you’ll be able to fully appreciate how the improved matchmaker changes battle quality for the better and makes World of Tanks more enjoyable than ever!

New Matchmaking: What’ll Be Different?

Let briefly recall how the improved matchmaker will now assemble battles. Main goals are:

  • To reduce the number of battles with machines two-tiers higher (especially for Tier VI and VIII vehicles) and redistribute them into battles with tanks of the same tier and one-tier lower
  • To make battles more enjoyable for Premium Vehicles with preferential matchmaking. Now those of you who have these machines in your Garage will be less frequently getting matched with vehicles one-tier higher and more often with adversaries of the same tier and one-tier lower

Wargaming will achieve these goals by adding dynamic templates that can quickly adapt to the queue evolution, for both two-tier and three-tier battles. Here is a preliminary list of dynamic templates, which are being introduced:

  • 7-8, 6-9, and 4-11 for two-tier battles
  • 4-5-6 and 4-4-7 for three-tier battles

The 3-5-7 and the 5-10 systems are also possible, but you’ll face them less frequently – for example, if the queue structure is non-standard. This can happen if there are too many vehicles of the same class or specific machines in the queue. For example, if there are some battle missions specifically for TDs, and TDs make up 50%+ of all vehicles in the queue.

What will happen to the waiting time?

Just like outlined previously, the waiting time for solo players may slightly increase and will depend on the current situation in the queue. The waiting time for Platoons may increase a bit more, but the enjoyment in each battle should also increase. Most likely, you won’t notice a significant difference in the queuing time compared with the previous version of the matchmaker.

  1. Does preferred MM change apply globally or only for certain tiers?

  2. preferred MM is for premium vehicles such as Super Pershing, Wz111 etc

  3. I don’t have a lot of confidence in this, but we’ll know soon enough.

  4. This just feels too late.

I am not melodramatic like a lot of people that have cried “this game is dying” for multiple years, but my feeling about the game is similar to breaking up with a girlfriend that you’ve been with for a long time. Even though they apologise and say “Things will be different this time, I’ve changed, I’m a better person, please come back”, your feelings are already ruined.

  5. Have to admit that in the light of the past matchmaking systems, I also do have my doubts of whether this will be going to work or not. I don’t remember a time, when players haven’t expressed their unsatisfaction about the matchmaking system.

  6. People loved Frontline because it was a one tier fight…
WG will never make MM balanced in randoms because they want people to shoot gold and spend real money on premium accounts and tanks.

  7. I’ve had plenty of time to test it (mostly playing Tier VIII) and I’d say it works pretty well, all things considered. I wish it were possible to be Top Tier more often cause that still happens extremely rarely, but about half of the matches are equal Tier at least and that is fine by me.

Having said that, my enthusiasm is sort of held back since, in my opinion, this should not be a bright new feature but, in fact, a long overdue bugfix. How long ago was 3-5-7 introduced? Players started complaining right away, but as I recall it took Wargaming more than a year to even admit there was a problem. i still ‘fondly’ remember the article about their plans to remove special matchmaking in which they tried to gaslight us into believing that everybody was happy about the new MM. Really, it was about damn time they had sorted this out. I hope they won’t take as long to acknowledge a problem next time one arises. Better still, avoid making stupid mistakes (Obj. 268 4 anyone?) in the first place.

  8. Game is 100x worse. Something is wrong. I’m not a good player and I’m not a tomato. But going to a 20% win rate from 45%+ after 100 games post matchmaking with most being a total route means uninstalling. Other new players are saying the same thing.

  9. What is your in-game name? better to check stats, remember that when you are on a losing streak, always feels like everything is bad… recently I’ve seen someone claiming to have played 30 games in one night and lost all of them, and turned out to be 14 defeat and 1 win… With MM where he was mostly top tier but didn’t have the skill to turn the battle in favour of the team… MM overall, in my opinion, is much better. My experience has been overall positive.
