World of Tanks – Gamescom 2017 Player Party Developers Q&A

lyDuring Gamescom 2017, Wargaming had their usual Player Party with a lot of surprises. Taking the opportunity to talk with players, Developers did a Q&A and there was quite a bit of new information shared.

  • Work on Grand Battles began quite some time ago, though most of the work has been in optimizing performance due to the large number of players and size of the map.
  • Grand Battles was made into a sort of sub-mode so it doesn’t have a huge negative impact on the matchmaker.
  • It’s possible for the mode to be available to lower tiers. The main problem is that smaller view and signal ranges can lead to some problems with the large map size. Tanks could spend most of the time trying to find each other rather than fighting.
  • Chances of getting into a Grand Battle will depend entirely on the number of Tier X vehicles in the queue.
  • Nebelburg map will be reworked into HD along with all of the other Random Battle maps.
  • Developers aren’t sure how to balance HESH shells. HESH will stay in the game as a British line feature.
  • Wargaming has a desire to remove unnecessary guns from some tanks. For example, 10,5 cm Kw.K. L/28 from Tiger I. The idea is to remove a lot of unnecessary guns that can make a tank very hard to grind.
  • T-54 turret was buffed because it’d started to become obsolete after it was transferred to HD.
  • There are more Chinese premium tanks in the works. (H: not sure if this was just about WZ-120-1G FT, or if there are even more coming.)
  • Wargaming has some interesting ideas about what to do with the KV-5, but we can’t disclose anything yet. (H: As far as I know, it will be used as a test case to balance other premiums.)
  • HD maps will include elements of Havok, though they will be visual only and don’t expect buildings to fall down.
  • Track marks on the ground won’t just be a generic texture, now they will be calculated depending on position, speed, angle of rotation etc.
  • Vegetation will also respond to shots fired. (H: This can be seen on HD maps videos)
  • Maps dont’t end at the red line now, the horizon line has been extended to make things a bit more realistic and immersive. (H: Maps are basically bigger, but the playable area is limited to normal size as with SD maps.)
  • Red line will be turned into a red wall to better distinguish the map boundaries.
  • Wargaming could now build night maps, however they aren’t sure how much they are really needed.
  • Ranked Battles were tested on the main servers, as players there will treat them a bit more seriously than Common Test or Sandbox.
  • Two maps were removed from the Ranked Battles, because skilled players are more likely and quick to find imbalanced positions.
  • There are plans to introduce more maps into Grand Battles.
  • Frontline mode (Epic Normandy) was made with some new graphics technology, which was released for use in the Grand Battles mode.
  • Only a few things will be left on the client from BigWorld when the HD maps are complete.
  • Improved graphics had three big obstacles: First was getting the tech to bring the graphics to a 2018 level. Second was optimization. Third being to fit all that to gameplay.
  • Wargaming is not sure about the upper threshold for requirements. The biggest they currently have is the equivalent of an 8k picture, but their estimate is that only 0.5% of players could reach that, and it would be a 100Gb client. (H: There is actually a even better version, buts it’s secret.)
  • Main goal was optimization. Wargaming wants no FPS drops for those playing on medium settings on older PCs. For those with top rigs, will probably see a FPS increases even on higher settings.
  • Wargaming wanted to keep the gameplay for maps as close as they currently are. However they did take the opportunity to correct a few problems with some maps.
  • In addition to new graphics, music will also be improved. Soundtracks for all of the new maps have been recorded. It was named Music 2.0 and it has 2 features: it’s a reactive track, which changes to what is happening on the battlefield, and it’s a dedicated track for each map.
  • Sandbox Server will open again very soon, probably in the fall, so players can test the new HD maps.
  • The mode portal was a simple and elegant solution to deal with cheat/illegal mods. This way Wargaming won’t have to ban players, because they won’t be able to access, download and install these mods.

  2. Talked to Milos Jebarec about this topic, he said it will be around next year, cause they have to test every single mod etc.

  3. I don’t mind them working on new Chinese premiums, but give us some bloody british premiums. THe Chinese have so many already and the brits are still stuck at 1 (ONE!) tier 8 premium, come on WG, why do you hate them so much, I’m sure I’m not alone in asking this. (For years now, like even when fv4202 was still tier X…)

  5. they should just make 1 nightmap as copy of any existing daymap and throw it on the testserver to see if it is appealing.
    when HD maps come to sandbox it will be the first time I’m interested in the sandbox 🙂
