Supertest: M18 (90), Tier VII Premium Tank Destroyer

2 min read

Ever wanted a Premium version of the Hellcat? The M18 (90) is an American Tier VII tank destroyer, just entered Supertest and will be a Premium vehicle. In its essence, it’s a Pre Update 0.9.5 nerf Hellcat, but one tier higher. If characteristics don’t change, this vehicle will severely lack penetration to deal with Tier VIII heavy tanks and Tier IX vehicles.

In a nutshell, it’s a Hellcat but moved to Tier VII. It’s 90mm gun causes 240 points of damage on average. A standard AP shell penetrates 167 mm of enemy armour, while a special APCR goes further and will make a dent in the opposing vehicle 203 mm deep. The dispersion and aiming time are quite satisfying and make 0.35 at 100 m and 1.7, respectively. As for the view range, it is 370 m.

Let’s touch upon its survivability, because regardless of how good you are at firing, what matters is whether you are good at surviving or not. So to keep your 800 hit points intact, you will have to excel at the art of positioning as, let’s face it, the vehicle has cardboard-thick armour reaching up to 12 mm in the hull and up to 127 mm in the turret. However, the TD’s mobility makes up for its lame armour easily, with a max speed reaching 72 km/h and a power-to-weight ratio of 23.5 hp/t.

Summing up, the ?18 (90) provides for familiar gameplay typical of a dynamic TD that’s at its best when used in the ambush role. To make the best of this American, take the most advantageous position (the TD can do it quickly) and then keep adapting yourself to the situation and follow the allies while supporting them at a distance.

  1. Yeah, if it gets T7 penetration then it’s probably a buy. Otherwise not.

  2. Is it not inappropriate to balance around gold ammo right before a gold ammo nerf? I am skeptical of the Leopard 1 buffs that highly favor gold apcr and anticpate that Wargaming will shaft the Leopard 1 during the rebalance. Considering that very notion is the reason Wargaming wont rebalance the 430u or that bad standard pen but tremendous gold pen is what has made the type 59 tremendous when pressing 2….i just dont get it nor do i trust the company to get “premium ammo” right ever. I like the Hellcat, but confidence is low that this company can get it right. 800 hp is also 1 shot material for low tier arty and kv2s just off the top of my head.

  3. Well said man. I agree that balancing a tank around its gold ammo when wargaming and almost everyone agrees premium ammo needs changes. I hope they don’t shaft the leopard its pretty good now. Its really a shame bc wargaming is so far going threw with the fail of buffing ap damage and not touching the source of the issue gold ammo. As many pointed out on the forums this will not keep people from spamming the same amount of gold. They need to limit gold ammo or nerfs its damage but no instead they going to buff hp tanks and then up regular ammo damage so dumb and such a waste of time.

  4. Nope. I bought the tier 6 T78 Tank Destroyer prototype, the M18 wanna be. Close enough for me.
