The Asahio-class destroyers were larger and more capable that the preceding Shiratsuyu class, as Japanese naval architects were no longer constrained by the provisions of the London Naval Treaty. These light cruiser-sized vessels were designed to take advantage of Japan’s lead in torpedo technology, and to accompany the Japanese main striking force and in both day and night attacks against the United States Navy as it advanced across the Pacific Ocean, according to Japanese naval strategic projections.Despite being one of the most powerful classes of destroyers in the world at the time of their completion, none survived the Pacific War.

What is the point of having this when we already have the Kagero?

Basing of those stats it’s clear that this ship worse than crappy Kagero. Personally I can’t find any reason to spend a real money on ship that is worse than regular in tree. Do WG really thinks that the players are so brainless to buy this ****?

There was a time when premiums were supposed to be slightly worse than regular techtree vehicles (be it tanks or ships) because they made more credits and could be used for training purposes without penalties. That they became BETTER than techtree stuff was a pretty controversial choice by WG (but then again, moneyyy), and it has been going on for so long that now players expect premiums to be AT LEAST equal to techtree stuff. Asashio has the same concealment and torpedo performance as Kagerou (which IMHO are its most important parameters as a IJN torpedo boat), but pays for it with worse gun performance (terrible reload speed and I suspect also typical bad turret traverse) and very poor rudder shift (which however could be explained if these ships were really as large as light cruisers).
