Portuguese Restoration of Independence
1 min readHello everyone,
As most of you know I’m Portuguese and today is one, if not the most, important bank holiday in Portugal: Restoration of Independence.
This date recalls the action of Portuguese Nobles, who on December 1, 1640, invaded the Royal Palace and acclaimed D. João, Duke of Bragança, as King of Portugal.
The Restoration of Independence was the culmination of a 60 years period of great discontent on the part of the Portuguese population that was not satisfied with the Iberian union, between Portugal and Spain. The Iberian union caused problems for the Portuguese population, with taxes overload and Portugal’s involvement in the conflicts in Spain.
For all the Portuguese readers: Happy Restoration of Independence Day.
Way to go Portugal, restore that independence!
