World of Warships Supertest: Pan-European Tier VIII Destroyer Split
6 min readHistorical background
Split was a Yugoslav large destroyer designed for the Royal Yugoslav Navy in the late 1930s. The ship was designed to support the raiding strategy that Yugoslavia had in mind in case of a war with Italy. Split was initially meant to carry five 140 mm guns as main battery, completed by two triple torpedo launchers.
The ship was laid down in July 1939 but sadly, in April 1941, Yugoslavia was invaded by Italy and the uncompleted ship was captured. The Italians continued working on her until they had to scuttle Split with the Armistice of 1943. Soon after, she would be refloated by the Germans… just to be scuttled again in late 1944 to avoid her being captured by the Yugoslav Partisans. She would be refloated (again) but at this point, the Tito-Stalin split of 1948 brought any idea of completing her to a halt. It is only thanks to the cooperation of the United States of America and the United Kingdom that Split would finally be completed, almost 20 years after being laid down. However, her characteristics would be quite different from the initial design. Her main battery consisted of four single 127 mm/38 (the same as the Fletcher-class destroyers) and her torpedo armament consisted of only one quintuple launcher. She, however, had a much more extensive anti-submarine warfare armament.
Once commissioned in July 1958, the ship would be designated as flagship and served as such until the late 1970s when a boiler explosion forced her into retirement as a training ship. She was finally decommissioned in 1980 and scrapped in 1986.
In World of Warships, we are getting Split as she was originally designed.

For the classic reminder, this is a ship in testing, anything can change so don’t look at her like she would already be released.

Personal Opinion
It is with Split that the new Pan-European destroyer line seems to shine as she is the first to receive a Surveillance Radar consumable. However, it isn’t as outrageous as other radars. Or is it… The thing is that while the radar of Split and the higher tier ships only last for 10 seconds (up to 13.2 seconds), it has a 9.0 km range and reloads in 60 seconds which is half of the standard reload of that consumable. The best thing is that you can also combine the radar with your Smoke Generator to bully enemy destroyers particularly hard. You can use that radar twice in a single Smoke Generator duration.
On top of that radar, the firepower also goes up quite significantly from the previous ship. The guns somehow have the same stats as those of the French high-tier destroyer but with a faster reload than Le Terrible.
The only glaring issue of the ship is the horrible concealment of 9.5 km (7.695 km if you are fully specced for concealment) which is the third worse concealment of any destroyer in the game, behind Kléber with 9.58 km, and Khabarovsk with 9.7 km.
