World of Warships Supertest: Pan-European Tier VII Destroyer Grom

Historical background

ORP Grom was the lead ship of a pair of destroyers serving in the Polish Navy and built the British shipbuilder J. Samuel White. Grom was laid down in July 1935; launched in July 1936 and commissioned in May 1937.

At the end of August 1939, Grom, alongside her sistership Błyskawica and the older ORP Burza executed the Peking Plan as a war with Germany was guaranteed at this point. The Polish Navy would find itself cornered in the Baltic Sea by the overwhelming Kriegsmaserine forces. As such, all three ships set sail to reach Great Britain. This decision was the right one as the remaining Polish ships left in the Baltic Sea were quickly either sunk or captured when the Invasion of Poland began.

Afterward, during the Norwegian campaign, Grom would make herself a reputation as the most hated of all Allied forces as she very often deployed along the coastline, opening fire on German ground forces when given the opportunity. Sadly, her reputation ended up being her doom. At the beginning of May 1940, while on a gunfire support mission in the Narvik region, she was targeted by a Heinkel He 111. The ship was hit by two bombs, causing an internal explosion that quickly sent her to the bottom.

Her wreck remained untouched until October 1986 when she was explored by divers.

For the classic reminder, this is a ship in testing, anything can change so don’t look at her like she would already be released.

The Armor

Personal Opinion

Well… Grom is literally Błyskawica but worse. She has the same HP pool, the same firepower, the same speed, and the same concealment but then she also has a worse firing range, much worse torpedoes, and a weaker Engine boost.
In return, the ship gets better concealment by about 500 m and better rudder shift time. While the better concealment is appreciable, it isn’t anything to write home about. For the rudder shift time, considering that most destroyers have an already fast rudder shift, it isn’t particularly relevant.

Considering that Błyskawica herself isn’t a particularly appealing ship these days, you can already guess how Grom will be doing.
