World of Warships Supertest: Commonwealth Tier VII Premium Destroyer Huron

Historical background

HMCS Huron was a Tribal-class destroyer serving in the Canadian Navy during the Second World War and the Korean War. The ship was laid down in July 1941, launched in June 1942, and commissioned in July 1943.

During the Second World War, the ship took part in the Arctic convoys, carrying supplies and personnel to Murmansk. The ship was present at the Battle of North Cape in December 1943 during which Scharnhorst was sunk. In June 1944, the ship would take part in the defense of the Allied invasion fleet, notably pursuing the German destroyer Z-32 with HMCS Haida until it ran aground. The two Tribal-class then proceeded to hammer the grounded German ship with their main battery. The ship would continue to patrol the coasts of France, sinking two German minesweepers with HMS Tartar.

Huron returned to Canada in August where she underwent a refit before being sent back to Europe for more convoy escort duty. In May 1945, a refit was started to prepare her for a transfer to the Pacific theater but it was canceled after Japan surrendered. Huron was decommissioned and put in reserve in March 1946.

In 1950, the ship was brought back into service for the Korean War. While she was initially meant to be a training unit, in January 1951, Huron ended up being deployed and performed numerous patrols and carrier escort duties. She was then sent back to Canada in September for a major refit that was only completed in 1953. The ship would stay in Service until April 1963 when she was decommissioned and later scrapped in 1965 at La Spezia in Italy.

When it comes to World of Warships, Huron is present as she was during the Second World War. She is equipped with a Repair Party, a Hydroacoustic Search, and an Engine Boost.

The Armor

Personal Opinion

On paper, Huron looks like a very strong gunboat destroyer. Compared to her sister Haida, while she loses concealment as well as a Smoke Generator, she gets a faster main battery reload, better Hydroacoustic Search, and a Repair Party.
